Data Security for the Private Sector

Data security measures for the Private Sector

Data breaches can be relentless and unforgiving. Consumers assume their personal data such as bank account details are safe when given to a supplier. The ramifications of data breaches can be far reaching for both the consumers and private sector companies, such as retailers.

Human error has contributed to data loss substantially, increasing to 94%, a rise of 31% since 2014 (ICO). Data protection is changing globally with the new GDPR and organisations will need to revisit current policies and procedures.

Adapting to the changing environment is now more crucial than ever as fines are increasing by a considerable amount. You have a responsibility to keep your customer’s data safe.

ICO fines escalate for data breaches

The Information Commissioners Office is the UK’s regulator of data protection. With the current Data Protection Act (1998), the ICO have had the authority to fine organisations up to £500,000, dependant on the severity of the breach.

With the GDPR coming into effect as of 25th May 2018, fines will alleviate to €20m or 4% global turnover (whichever is higher) following a breach, this is a substantial increase to the current fine and the implications following a breach could be far worse.

The GDPR is coming!

If you are not compliant by the deadline of 25th May 2018, organisations could now face a fine of up to €20m or 4% global turnover (whichever is higher)
